Historic Mission
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded in 1772 as the fifth of California's Spanish missions and remains the heart of the city's historic district today.
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was established in 1772 by Spanish Franciscan priests led by Father Junípero Serra's missionary effort along the California coast. The mission was intended to convert indigenous Salish people and establish Spanish control of the region. The original adobe church burned in the 1820s and was rebuilt with a tile roof, a distinctive feature that later influenced mission architecture up and down the coast.
The mission's central location—at the intersection of the north-south El Camino Real and routes to the interior valleys—made it a natural gathering place. Over the centuries it has served as a parish church, a military barracks, a school and a community center. Today the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is a National Historic Landmark, still an active Catholic parish and a draw for visitors interested in California history.
